Top Ten Tuesday: Ten Characters Everyone Loves But I Just Don't Get

Tuesday, March 8, 2016

So it's come to this. The TTT where we all stop being friends. Of course we can say, "oh I don't need everyone to love my favorite character, I respect everyone's opinions!" That's a lie. I judge people most harshly for their wrongness regarding Sansa Stark and Celaena Sardothien and you're about to judge me for these ten characters I just don't get.

1. Adam Parrish - The Raven Cycle

Let's get the big one out of the way. I liked the first two TRC books, but didn't obsess over them the way a lot of my friends did. A lot of that is because I 100% do not get Pynch as a ship and Adam in general. Part of the appeal of the Raven Boys is their grayness, but I just find Adam unpleasant and ungrateful.

2. Jessica Darling - Jessica Darling

I actually liked Jessica in Sloppy Firsts, but by Charmed Thirds, I realized she was never going to mature. I parted ways with the series because I'm sorry Jessica; it's not me, it's you.

3. Jacob - Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children

The entire plot of the first book revolves around Jacob being a sulky ass first to his grandfather, then to his parents. Someone should have turned this boy over their knee a long time ago. He definitely shouldn't be rewarded for his temper tantrums with his grandfather's magic, time-traveling girlfriend.

4. Gale - The Hunger Games

Mockingjay. And that's all I have to say to that.

5. Will Parry - His Dark Materials

Introducing Will and the weird pre-teen love drama ruined the series. #sorryboutit

6. Augustus Waters - The Fault in Our Stars

Gus is inherently unlikable. He's vain, pretentious, and doesn't listen to what Hazel actually wants. He's pushy, making it impossible for Hazel to say no to the trip to Amsterdam. The kid holds unsmoked cigarettes in his mouth and thinks this is somehow damaging the tobacco industry. The only genuine emotion he shows in the whole book is when the plane takes off and he's scared.

7. Kelandry of Mindelan - Protector of the Small

I don't dislike Kel, but I definitely don't get why she got a series and not say, young Thayet? Buri? The Bazhir? MY MOTHERLOVING NUMAIR PREQUEL?  Ahem, I apologize. I have a lot of 90's fantasy feels and none of them belong to Kel, sadly.

8. Bill Compton - Southern Vampire Chronicles

I'm not one to get into shipping wars, but if Sookie had ended up with Bill, I would have flipped tables. Never mind that he lied to her. Raped her. Spied on her. (No actually, I mind those things quite. a. bit.) Bill is the most boring vampire in the known universe.

9. Superman

Overpowered, self-important, and a terrible lover, what is there to like about Superman? His stories are always terribly contrived, because the character can't actually be hurt without one specific rock from a billion miles away. And he's treated Lois terribly for fifty years now. Batman's not a great guy, but at least he's not so damn...nice about it.

10. Thomas Mackee - Saving Francesca/The Piper's Son

Oh Tom. I actually kind of shipped him and Francesca in the first book, but of all the characters, I think he's the last one I was looking for a sequel about. The book was just ok for me; I would have given anything for it to be about Tara and not 300 pages of misery about poverty and deadbeat dads. I don't hate Tom, I just don't love him.

Well there we go, darlings. Tar me and feather me. Or do you maybe agree? Tell me about it in the comments, (unless you're going to tell me Sansa sucks; this is a Sansa-safe blog.)

    1. It's Tom, isn't it? I'm sorry! I wanted to like The Piper's Son so much more than I did. :(

      Love me anyway?

    2. yes Tom but it's okay. I have complicated feels on him. I can see all his bad parts and your points are really valid and yeetttttt I love him and ship him and Tara like fire.

  3. I love that you have Superman on your list haha! He's never been a favorite of mine either. He's as "All American" as Captain America without the interesting back story, struggle with moral grayness, or the great guy attitude. Oh man, I remember loving Will but I haven't read His Dark Materials in 8 years. I get the Adam thing too, it took a couple reads for me to feel like I understood his character more. But I will always love Gansey, Blue, and Ronan more. Noah is another one that I feel like I don't love as much as everyone else hah.

    1. heh, I loved Will the first time and hated him the second time I read as a teen. However, Lyra remains flawless every time.

    2. Until the MCU, I didn't get Cappy either. I never liked the clean-cut thing, until Evans entered our lives. 😍 I was 100% a Wolverine/Batman girl.

I like and dislike parts of all the Raven Crew, which is what makes them special, but the love for Adam and Pynch just confuses me. Like he's such a non-entity to me, I can't understand where all this supposed romance comes from?

  4. Haha I love your intro! Yes it's fun to see where people stand and the books I've read on your list I get your reasoning. I didn't care for Gale and yeah Jacob (Miss P's) was sulky. This has been fun! My WoW
