Did you know that the trend of zombies versus vampires can be graphed by which party was President at the time? Zombies are red and vampires are blue, apparently! And if you'd like to see a graph of this surpringinly interesting bit of information, that can be found here. Interesting and also weird! Cracked.com (a website I loooove) has a great post on why each party has its influence.
After Hurricane Irene, several small towns in Vermont, and in New York have lost their entire children's sections due to flooding. Want to help? You can - donations are welcome.
Who (that alive for the 90s) doesn't know Sir-Mix-a-Lot's "Baby Got Back"? Well it's been redone and improved! Read "Baby Got Books" for a laugh.
Fantasy nowadays tends toward long, epic tales strewn about in multiple books. Well, at least the fantasy I primarily read does (Patrick Rothfuss' Kingkiller Chronicles, George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, Steven Erikson's Malazan Tale of the Fallen, Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time, Brandon Sanderson's multiple series though The Way of Kings topped 1,000 pages and it is the first of a 10 book series titled The Stormlight Archives to name a few). This is an interesting pieve on the "perils and pleasures of longrunning fantasy series." (The AV Club) I find I do not mind long, epic fantasy IF it is worth the time to both wait for and read the tomes.
100 Years of Style in 101 seconds. Truly clever and adorable, I can't help but love a coordinated, cheeky dance routine. (The Hairpin)
Banned Books Week is fast approaching, and this interactive/dodad thingy about popularly banned novels caught my eye the other day.
From Flavorwire, "10 Novels We Dare You to Finish." I'm sadly lacking in this one: I've only read War and Peace and Atlas Shrugged. Cyrptonomicon is in my tbr pile, however!
I found some AMAZING 60s/70s era video of a jaguar fighting and killing a. caiman (not crocodile as title in video says) and b. an 11-foot anaconda. Bad. ASS.
Reviews I've Posted:
And yesterday I bought two novels (they were new! only $3.50 each! Don't judge me!) that I've heard a lot of praise for and couldn't resist.
First up:
Katsa has been able to kill a man with her bare hands since she was eight—she’s a Graceling, one of the rare people in her land born with an extreme skill. As niece of the king, she should be able to live a life of privilege, but Graced as she is with killing, she is forced to work as the king’s thug.
When she first meets Prince Po, Graced with combat skills, Katsa has no hint of how her life is about to change. She never expects to become Po’s friend. She never expects to learn a new truth about her own Grace—or about a terrible secret that lies hidden far away . . . a secret that could destroy all seven kingdoms with words alone.

and the second:
First in an all-new series where seductive danger and steampunk adventure abound in the gritty world of the Iron Seas.
After the Iron Duke freed England from Horde control, he instantly became a national hero. Now Rhys Trahaearn has built a merchant empire on the power-and fear-of his name. And when a dead body is dropped from an airship onto his doorstep, bringing Detective Inspector Mina Wentworth into his dangerous world, he intends to make her his next possession.
But when Mina uncovers the victim's identity, she stumbles upon a conspiracy that threatens the lives of everyone in England. To save them, Mina and Rhys must race across zombie-infested wastelands and treacherous oceans-and Mina discovers the danger is not only to her countrymen, as she finds herself tempted to give up everything to the Iron Duke.

I'm pretty excited for both, though I will likely hold off on actually reading them until I can get my hands on sequels as well. And that's it for this week's Blog Watch :)
