Danielle's January Reads and Book Hauls

Sunday, February 1, 2015
This has not been a good month for me, personally or professionally. I suffered a pretty serious depressive episode right before Christmas, which is just peachy since that's not the mental illness I've been diagnosed with. (85% of people with GAD also have depression, though, so it's not like this was totally unexpected.) It's taken me more than a month to feel anything approaching normal, which has severely effected my responsibilities to you all. I did get a fair amount of reading finished, but reviews have definitely suffered. I'm feeling better and getting back into my routine, which includes round up posts! As such:

Read:

Legion: Skin Deep by Brandon Sanderson - 4 Stars
The Oathbreaker's Shadow by Amy McCulloch - 3.5 Stars
The Rat Queens, Vol. 1: Sass & Sorcery by Kurtis J. Wiebe - 4.5 Stars (Review)
Saving Francesca by Melina Marchetta - 4.5 Stars
I'll Meet You There by Heather Demetrios - 5 Stars (Review)
Zeus Grants Stupid Wishes by Cory O'Brien - 4 Stars (Review)
A Horrible Experience of Unbearable Length by Roger Ebert - 3 Stars
The Piper's Son by Melina Marchetta - 3.5 Stars
Trade Me by Courtney Milan - 5 Stars (Review)
The Mermaid's Madness by Jim C. Hines - 4 Stars

I never posted my Christmas haul, which was smaller than most years:

I mentioned in my November wrap up that A Little Something Different and The Dream Thieves came from Rashika. I bought myself Rogues and a new copy of Shadow and Bone in a black Friday sale, and Shadows and Masks, The Savages, and a new Harry Potter set came from the husband.

Meg sent me a Kindle copy of Endsinger, obviously because our relationship is built on pain and sorrow. Jess sent me Sirantha Jax and Enclave, along with the coolest tote ever.

And then there was the BookOutlet.com Boxing Day sale. Oh my god, this goddamn sale. I got 14 books, which is actually restrained because I had 23 in my cart at first.

Five of these I already own in Kindle format, but new to me are:

Wild Awake by Hilary T. Smith
The Winner's Curse by Marie Rutkowski
Plus One by Elizabeth Fama
Team Human by Justine Larbalestier
Breathe by Sarah Crossan
Magnolia by Kristi Cook
Pivot Point by Kasie West
Charm & Strange by Stephanie Kehn
The Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan

I'm totally boned, guys.

Also bought:

Rat Queens Vol. 1: Sass & Sorcery, Shiver, Gracling, Unwind, The Scorpio Races, and Crown of Midnight.
As for ARCs, I got 8 in the last month, which is totally stressful, but three of those were requested back in October. C'est la vie. Part of this mental health stuff is letting go of things I can't control. At least the release dates are spread out.

Seeker by Arwen Elys Dayton
Gabby Duran and the Unsittables by Elise Allen
Trade Me by Courtney Milan
The Summer of Chasing Mermaids by Sarah Ockler
After Hours by Claire Kennedy
Last Year's Mistake by Gina Ciocca
Battlesaurus: Rampage at Waterloo by Brian Falkner
School for Sidekicks by Kelly McCullough

So there we go, I got too many books and I did too few reviews, but I'm determined to have a better February. What about you guys? Did you start the new year off strong?

  1. I was also not productive this month and I was making goals that I couldn't reach, which led to me getting ultimately disappointed in the end. But that's alright because I read some awesome books like Firefight by brandon Sanderson. Brandon Sanderson is my favorite author and it was nice to get in a few more books by him. I also ordered the Mistborn trilogy this month, so I can't wait to get started on that! It seems like you read a lot this month and even got some nice books for Christmas :D

    1. I LOVE Sanderson so much! Mistborn was my favorite book by him until I read Way of Kings, so you are in for a good time! How was Firefight? I bought Steelheart on release day, but I still haven't read it!

  2. I am super jealous of your book haul! And I keep seeing these beautiful boxsets of Harry Potter that I want to get sooooo bad but tell myself, since I have the whole series already, that I am not going to buy them.
I also bought 'Shadow and Bone' recently and I am excited to read it. I can't wait to see what you think about that book :).

    1. I can't help myself with Harry. It's my goal to have every set. I don't know why, but they're so beautiful and so important to my childhood, I just need them all!

  3. I'm glad you're starting to feel better, Danielle. Don't worry about us or reviews, just take care of yourself. And the fact that you were still able to read is pretty awesome. :)
Man, so many great books!! I just saw that Harry Potter set at Costco and I WANTS IT. So bad. I'm very intrigued by the Courtney Milan contemporary romance. I haven't read her newest series yet, I really should make some time for that. Happy Reading!

    1. Thank you so much Bonnie!

I LOVE this Harry Potter set, but now they have the new illustrated one coming out and I need that too. I swear I have more Harry Potter books than most libraries.

I've got a review of Courtney's book coming up, but I HIGHLY recommend it. The summary is crap; I'm not even sure if I'd call it a romance specifically. It's special.

  4. That's an impressive list and stack of books! I'm glad you're starting to feel better, that must be so hard to not feel like yourself <3 Don't you LOVE the HP box set?! It's so pretty and I love the spines. And you know I'm so excited you're reading The Dream Thieves :D I still need to read the GRRM story in Rogues, and Magnolia. Happy reading and don't worry about catching up with reviews. It's all supposed to be fun and about what you enjoy.
